The Lizieux peak was formed 12.7 million years ago, rising to an altitude of 1,388m.
The summit of Pic du Lizieux, surrounded by scree from the last Ice Age, is the exit point of a viscous lava that spread out on either side of the summit to form a vast plateau at its base, now covered by forests.
The Pic du Lizieux is a success with a geological formation composed of phonolite. This rock, lauze, is characterized by a clear sound when struck.
It’s this property that gives it its name.
The summit is covered with scree, where the stones sing underfoot, and you’ll discover an orientation table installed on July 12, 1970, which provides a panoramic view of the Mézenc high plateau, the Lignon, a large part of the Pays des Sucs and the Meygal, and, depending on whether the weather is clear or not, the Alps including Mont Blanc.
Theforest is a deep, dark green and is classified as a Natura 2000 and “Volcans en liberté” area.
Management is inter-communal. It is home to roe deer, wild boar, marten, ermine and over 100 species of birds.
Sucs, cone, dome – how complicated is that? If you want to understand all about volcanoes in the Haute-Loire , the Groupe Géologique de la Haute-Loire ‘s book“La Haute-Loire Richesses géologiques” is a fascinating read. On sale at our reception desks.
