Bonas trail

Hiking itinerary to climb the Pic du Lizieux

Le sentier de Bonas” is a short hike (5.3km) that takes you up to the Pic du Lizieux. It’s a concentration of a whole territory: volcano, flora and fauna, history, religion and traditional architecture.

360-degree panorama on the Sucs

An orientation table has been located at the summit of this ancient volcano since July 12, 1970, offering a 360° panoramic view of the Sucs, Mézenc and Meygal massifs. On a clear day, you can even see the Alps!

The path winds through forests and rocky outcrops. The site is an old quarry from which lauze was extracted. Just a few hundred metres away, as the birds fly, Lac Bleu is a real gem on the site of a former quarry.

The Lizieux has been around for 12.7 million years…

A little history

On one of the slopes of the Pic du Lizieux, in the Middle Ages, the castrum de Bonas (fortified camp) was a perched, fortified site. A tower with a first enclosure marked the lord’s estate. A second enclosure housed the houses. Peasants could find refuge here. It was destroyed in 1565 during the Wars of Religion. (explanatory sign on the path leading to the Pierre Levée from the Chièze parking lot).

During the Second World War, the Lizieux massif and surrounding villages were one of the sites of the Haute-Loire Resistance. A monument commemorating the event of April 22, 1944 has been erected at the Chièze Memorial near the village of Montbuzat, in memory of the murdered resistance fighters.

A project is currently under study: to create a living place of remembrance, by rehabilitating an old farmhouse steeped in history into an open educational and discovery space.
