Cheese and dairy products

In Auvergne, the volcanic mountains with their emblematic landscapes and unspoilt nature welcome you with a remarkable and inescapable wealth of biodiversity. Here, men and women have perpetuated ancestral know-how, guaranteeing cheeses of exceptional quality. To taste our local cheeses is to experience the richness of our meadows, our landscapes and our values.

Our local cheeses

Although not as well known as our Cantal neighbors and their 5 Auvergne PDO stars (Cantal, Saint-Nectaire, Fourme d’Ambert, Bleu d’Auvergne and Salers), we can be proud to have among our dairy products those that make Auvergne gastronomy so famous.

For a quick tour of our cheese platter, let yourself be guided by your desires and the good smells of farm-fresh milk you’ll find on the market stalls.

On the markets

Tuesday mornings in Tence, it’s time to stock up on yoghurts, butter and milk at the Vach’mont Bio stand (GAEC in Tence)! A treat for the taste buds, with a range that has often won medals at regional competitions, and it’s organic! Julien and Aline will be delighted to open the doors of their farm to you, with all its animals and even a champion herding dog!

And when Saturday morning comes, why not make a gourmet stop at the Délices du Mézenc stand, where Coralie is sure to have something to suit every taste and introduce you to our very own artisous cheese! Spicy or creamy, there’s something to suit every taste. And what a delight it is to relive childhood memories with a slice of rye or cereal bread.

And for the road, would you like another slice? So don’t hesitate to try one of our cheeses, whether goat’s, sheep’s or cow’s, you’ll have all the textures and flavors at your fingertips.

In the store or on the farm...

It’s with no regrets that we make the detour to the Gérentes dairy, located in the neighboring commune of Haut-Lignon, in Araules, the famous store where you don’t know which one to choose and where you stock up for the family and the return from vacation.

If you like, you’ll also find a small Gérentes boutique in Le Mazet-St-Voy, and what’s more, it’s right next door to our Halle Fermière. In fact, you’ll find a selection of local cheeses from our producers here too, along with good local bread and jam for those who like it sweet and sour. Who can beat that?

On the Haut-Lignon, several farms open their doors to you in summer, but also in spring with the De ferme en ferme operation. You’ll be able to talk to farmers like Marion and Samuel MURAND at Les Vastres ‘ Bergerie du Vieux Moulin, Aline and Julien DELABRE at GAEC Vachmont bio in Tence, or Etienne and Mathieu VALLA at GAEC du Nid in Chambon-sur-Lignon.

What about donkey milk?

Have you ever tried donkey milk? It’s quite original, and you’ll find it here too, when you visit Karen and her donkeys in Tence.

La Savonnerie du Velay is located in Mascourtet, in the commune of Tence. Karen invites you to visit all year round, by appointment, and will be delighted to explain her passion for her craft. How do you make soap from the milk of your donkeys? You’ll be able to watch them in the wild, taste the milk according to the season, or leave with a soap with specific virtues.
