  • 233

The vélo-route between the Loire and Rhône rivers, a 360° nature experience!

A vélo-route is a cycling itinerary that uses all types of roads, including those shared with vehicles. Secured by demarcations and facilities, it is nevertheless seldom used by motorized vehicles.

A greenway is an exclusive right-of-way reserved for non-motorized traffic. It is designed for pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers and people with reduced mobility.

The Via Fluvia: Haute-Loire side

Closest to the Haut-Lignon, you’ll find it from the commune of Raucoules.

The Via Fluvia is an itinerary in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

Not far from Le Haut-Lignon, you’ll find the Lavalette dam (a natural bathing site), the Lignon gorges and the famous Himalayan footbridge, or the Velay Express station at Raucoules.

An example of a route: Raucoules - Riotord

Total distance 19 kms – total ascent 304m, total descent 260m.
Starting from Raucoules (parking d’Oumey), Montfaucon-en-Velay (parking la Gare), Dunières (parking La Galoche) or Riotord (parking allée des Tilleuls).

From Raucoules – Gare d’Oumey to Riotord (Maisonneuve), asphalt over the entire greenway route. Safe route. Picnic areas, benches and toilets along the way.
Take care when crossing the railway tracks at the Oumey station. Just after the wooden chalet, the Via Fluvia runs alongside a small factory for a few hundred meters, where cars and heavy goods vehicles can pass through.

Take a selfie every time you turn the wheel!

Top Story

The Via Fluvia route is an old railroad line that linked the Loire Valley to the Rhône Valley. Those who knew it will have fond memories of the steam train nicknamed “ la Galoche “: it got its name from the peasants of the time, wearing galoshes or clogs, who arrived in town by train. The townsfolk would then exclaim “les galoches arrivent!”
Now known as the Velay Express, thanks to enthusiasts who have set up the Voies Ferrées du Velay association, you can travel aboarda real period steam train!
An exhibition at Raucoules station takes you back to the glorious past of this original railway line. You can see the volunteers who are actively involved in restoring the railroad and its equipment.

Go live

You’ll also be able to hear the whistling of the locomotive or see the wisps of smoke coming straight from the ” Velay Express ” tourist train waiting for you at the Raucoules station. The Velay Express takes passengers to the slow rhythm of the trains of yesteryear, recalling the great epic of the railroads of yesteryear. Once you’re comfortably aboard, enjoy the scenery and savor this moment of tranquility in the heart of nature.
